WORKING WITH INTERNS

2021 Intern Article short Megan Marshall.png

Since 2016, I have been the
Internship Coordinator for the
McNeese State University Family Science program. Students are prepared for their internships as part of their Family Life Education Methods and Practice course by learning the skills and strategies needed for a successful careers strengthening families.

McNeese Family Science interns complete 120 hours of service through their assigned community partner. We work with a network of community level service providers who serve as site supervisors for our interns within their partner agencies.

McNeese Family Science arranges internships in a variety of communities throughout the United States.  For more insight into the service our interns perform in the field before graduation, please take a look at our
Internship Snapshot 2021 & Partner Listing.

You will also find our
2021 Intern Announcement Cards and our
2020 Interns' Celebration Video and their Legacy Messages for the next cohort of interns.  I am so proud of each of our graduates and their commitment to serving their communities.

Anonymous Feedback via

Student Evaluation of Instructor (SEI)

"Professor White is a highly effective instructor who cares for her students educationally as well as personally.

She was available for feedback and outlined work on a weekly basis making

it very clear cut."

"She has amazing feedback and makes sure to check on all of the students if she can see they are falling behind. She is very caring and understanding."

Regarding COVID-19...

"Throughout this difficult time, she has been very supportive and truly cares about our mental well-being, instead of trying to force more work on us. She’s found ways to give us assignments that relate to our work, but also provide self-care tips.

Great professor."

Legacy Project

An important part of our internship experience is considering what legacy we will leave once we continue on in our life journeys.  Our interns complete a Legacy Project through which they reflect on their journey toward graduation and map their path into their future.

In the Appreciation of the Past activities, interns reflect on their journey and those individuals who have supported them on their path.  They create a meaningful artifact in honor of their supporter and share it as a token of their appreciation.  Past tokens of appreciation have included letters, poetry, paintings, original songs, invitations to share a meal or coffee, and other acts of appreciation.

In the Preparing for the Next Generation

activities, interns reflect on their experience in the Family Science program.  They create meaningful ways to support those students who come after they have moved on.  The Flipgrid videos found on this page are Words of Wisdom Legacy messages created for the next cohort of interns.  Other examples of Next Generation activities include preparing a written FAQ, Flipgrid messages, or Round-Up items for new students to learn about how to succeed in the Family Science program.

In the Looking to the Future activities, interns begin making plans for their post-graduation job search.  Activity options include interviews with professionals in the field, refinement of their digital portfolios, rehearsing for interviews, and creating LinkedIn profiles to begin building their professional networks.
